NEUROMODULATORS (WRINKLE RELAXERS)

Botox® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA), Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) , and Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA) are called Neuromodulators (neuromuscular blocking agents) . They are FDA approved for treatment of a variety of conditions including the improvement of moderate to severe lines and wrinkles associated with the dynamic muscles of the face. When injected into targeted superficial muscles of the face, the motor nerve/muscle junction is temporarily inactivated. A softening of lines caused by squinting, frowning and raising the eyebrows begins and more youthful, relaxed, and a refreshed you emerges .

How will I know if Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® is right for me?

During an office visit, a full facial analysis will be conducted to determine whether one of these agents is right for you. All the agents work similarly to smooth and relax lines and wrinkles of targeted facial muscles. If you have had prior facial surgery of any kind, this will need to be disclosed, as anatomical landmarks may have been repositioned.

Will the treatment cause any pain?

A very fine and short needle is used to gently inject the agent and therefore produces minimal to no pain. Ice is generally applied prior, which acts as a numbing agent and also reduces the risk of bruising.

  • If you have had a prior allergic reaction
  • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
  • If you are currently breast-feeding
  • If you have any neuromuscular conditions (e.g., amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Lam bert-Eaton syndrome)

What are common side effects?

These agents are FDA approved and are considered safe. The most common side effects are discomfort, temporary bruising, swelling and redness at the injection sites. Headaches have been reported in some individuals whose forehead lines have been treated. Cold compresses and Tylenol/Acetaminophen will usually help relieve these symptoms.

Adverse reactions are uncommon, however have been reported. You should immediately call or seek immediate help if you experience any breathing , swallowing or speaking difficulties.

HOW SOON WILL IS SEE RESULTS AND HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

You can expect to see softening and relaxation of the targeted muscles within 3-4 days following treatment. It usually takes two weeks to see full results. Know that results are individually based and can last 3-4 months.
